A GROWING number of Americans are taking their health and well-being into their own hands, in part because they have lost faith in the institutions that are supposed to improve their lives.
Upper-middle-class and middle-class baby boomers who are facing their mortality, along with younger people who have grown up with a concern for the environment, are turning to food, dietary supplements and alternative medical treatments to enhance the quality and length of their lives.
